(Oct. 11, 2019)–Breaking alertly from the rail, longshot Rick’s Dream went to the front through hotly contested early fractions and stayed there under Efrain Hernandez, winning Friday’s $51,000 Santa Anita allowance feature by 3 ¼ lengths over Tiger Strike, who went head and head with him early. Trained by Reed Saldana, Rick’s Dream got six furlongs in 1:11.28.Claimed out of a $12,500 win on Aug. 29 at Del Mar, Rick’s Dream was off at 7-1 in a field of seven California-bred or sired three year olds and up and paid $17.20, $7.20 and $4.40.“He’s a nice little horse,” said Saldana. “He tries very hard and I used Efrain, because he works a lot of horses for me at Los Alamitos. This horse doesn’t like to switch leads, so I wanted to use Efrain because he’s familiar with him.”Owned by Big Iron Racing LLC, Rick’s Dream a 5-year-old gelding by Coil, out of the Decarchy mare Cantina’s Rose, improved his overall mark to 19-5-6-4. With the winner’s share of $30,600, he now has earnings of $119,771.Ridden by Edwin Maldonado, Tiger Strike was head and head for the early lead while in the middle of a three-horse spread with Satanta to his outside. On nearly even terms with the winner leaving the three sixteenths pole, he couldn’t match strides with him thereafter and finished second, a head in front of late-running It’s Fitting.Off at 6-1, Tiger Strike paid $6.60 and $4.00.Ridden by Victor Espinoza, It’s Fitting paid $6.20 to show, Satanta, the 9-5 favorite with Drayden Van Dyke, faded to sixth.Fractions on the race were 22.01, 45.36 and 58 flat.Racing resumes at Santa Anita with a nine-race card on Saturday.
