get themselves photographed with the beautifully lit up structure in the background passers-by often tend to trespass or assemble in large number near the gate Though the lights have been an almost daily feature for a year now the excitement among commuters or tourists to get themselves photographed near the UNESCO world heritage site has not waned What rekindles their joy they claim is the way the building gets enlivened through the use of different colours that represent different occasions Watch What Else Is making News “I make sure that upon each visit to CST I click a picture near the building to save the memory It looks just as beautiful each time I see it” said Geeta Bare a regular commuter In 2014 the Ministry of Tourism with the Maharashtra Tourism and Development Corporation (MTDC) decided to redefine the colouring pattern of the CST building giving it different lights on different days rather tha the facade lighting done earlier With a software-based technology called LED Red-Blue-Green (RBG) mechanism they display different lights on the structure by changing the intensity “In Mumbai we are the only heritage structure to use this mechanism to light a building Its impact helps the building look more lively and interactive for the commuters By sticking to themes or colouring it according to a situation or a festive occasion the Central Railway participates in the cause of the festival” said Narendra Patil Chief Public Relations Officer Central Railway Though the building has been lit up in the evening hours since the 1980s with a golden metallic light the various shades of colour were introduced only two years ago to be displayed for three-and-a-half hours between 630 pm and 10 pm With a total of 1080 lights each having its own code various combinations are programmed by the software to make default themes an official said “In the weekdays between Monday and Thursday we keep a routine golden light for the purpose of illumination For the weekends between Fridays and Sundays four different default themes of lights are changed every hour This is particularly done to attract the weekend crowd of tourists who come to South Mumbai” an official said With minimal manual supervision of a single supervisor for the evening hours of lighting there has never been a miss to this routine There are at least 20 different light themes saved in the system catering to various religious festive occasions or events officials claimed “Right from the Tricolour to festive occasions including Diwali or New Year’s eve we have a default light theme saved for each We also customise them for important days like the World Environment Day and others and also keep a specific colour if requested by any social body It is only on the World Earth Day on April 22 that we keep it dark” the official added In order to make sure power failures don’t affect the lighting five power systems have been involved Last year there was a faux pas when the building was lit up in Dutch colours instead of the colours of the French flag which was to be done to show solidarity with the victims of Paris terror attacks “Immense promotion of the lighting on social media has added to its popularity The lighting has added a new facet to the building by highlighting the structure and making it more attractive for tourists” Patil added What now remains a concern said CR officials is to get back almost Rs 70 lakh from MTDC authorities for making all arrangements to change the lighting facilities of the building “It was such a huge task that it took us almost one year to get due permissions and bring the software to light up the building each evening to complete use However we are yet to receive the funding as promised by the MTDC authorities for the same” Top NewsWritten by Mihir Vasavda | Updated: September 5 2016 12:56 pm When Abhinav Bindra’s father first asked if it was possible to make his son a big shooter Reinkemeier said ‘it’s impossible’ Top News I met Abhinav some 16 years ago in Munich during a World Cup He was a very young boy I was a very old man He came to me and asked if it was possible for him to train with me I said ‘yeah well why not’ He was the first shooter from India whom I had coached Back then Indian shooting was very poor His father asked if it was possible to make his son a big shooter or an Olympic champion My first response was ‘it’s impossible’ It was impossible because to be good in shooting in India because there was no infrastructure knowledge or technique shooting range and competition But there was something special about them I’ve been in shooting for 40 years and have seen an awful lot Other shooters who train under me come from countries where it is normal to win an Olympic medal So if am a sportsman from the USA I will go to the Olympics to win a gold medal Because if I don’t then I look like an a**hole Abhinav on the other hand came from a country where a gold medal was something unimaginable until he won it So the biggest difference for me was that he and his parents dared to imagine and visualise the impossible They set themselves a target and did everything to achieve it That was the real big step So we trained together to get better My first impression of Abhinav was that he was very polite He is what we call in German ‘bescheiden’ Modest These days almost every sport is forming its characters Most shooters are more or less quiet They are all introverts From this point of view Abhinav was not very different But what separates very good shooters from just the good ones is they go a little bit more in the extreme The real nucleus of performance is hard work Success is not about burning fire etc It’s combination of a lot of endurance little luck in the right moment getting the right vibrations and clear mind to see things in a positive manner And from this point of view Abhinav is the person with the clearest vision It has helped him achieve whatever he has with Beijing being his best performance The gold was a big deal for everyone in India and I understand why But for me and my wife Gaby who has worked with Abhinav as well a gold medal is not special Over the years I have had many shooters who have done that But I have observed the obsession around Abhinav is such that if he doesn’t win a gold medal in a tournament people ask what is wrong with him or the journalists ask when will he retire At the Rio Olympics when Abhinav couldn’t win a medal people wanted a sad story A loser story But I know the trouble we had to just get to the Olympics; to win that quota place Abhinav was ranked world No 18 or something So we were happy to get into the final Of course medal was our aim but you need to keep an overall perspective Yet in the final Abhinav gave India some nice drama We could see him coming from eighth place to fourth He gave India one hour of great sporting television and we should be grateful for this But the moment the final concluded he was asked ‘how does it feel to be fourth’ They missed the point completely Abhinav is a racehorse He was absolutely in the zone We had prepared like never before He had just one goal and that was to win the medal The desire was no less than Sydney or Athens or Beijing But it did not happen For those people who like shooting they will remember the final for a long time If you analyse truthfully then India is 50 years behind rest of the world They should be happy to see someone competing at the Olympics because even to get there he or she has to get the qualification at an international tournament That in itself is an achievement We always try to glorify sportspersons But the thing is if India wants to have success in sports then it needs structure What made Abhinav strong is just the structure – the way he looks for equipment the way he finds his coach the way he gets his physiotherapist – you cannot believe how much he did on fitness in the last two years So if India wants to play a role in international sport then it should not copy its heroes but instead build proper structures When the Chinese started to get into high performance sport they went out and bought coaches from all over the world Britain too have done the same which has drastically improved their performance in the last few years Abhinav knows structures of high performance And that’s perhaps what he might focus on now that he has retired I am not a prophet so I don’t know if Abhinav will miss going to the range every day If you do something for 20 years and suddenly stop it then you have always strange vibrations I stopped shooting 30 years ago but I still dream of competing So everything is possible But maybe he is going to business now and it will be a a good idea for him to put his energy there He has shown that if you follow the process success is not impossible to achieve He has been pragmatic in his approach always He has always been very practical So as he calls it a day it’s really important that we don’t make it a sentimental journey Heinz and his wife Gaby have coached Bindra for the last 16 years For all the latest Sports News download Indian Express App Raje may be on her way out but Lalit Modi may well end up alone and in jail as the biggest casualty of this latest political scandal The reason: He has given his (sur)namesake no choice but to take him down Lalit Modi AFP Even as Lalit Modi is prancing around Montenegro enjoying his ‘life-sized’ moment in front of the cameras Narendra Modi has been enduring a barrage of scathing criticism the likes of which make the #DespiteBeingAWoman cracks look almost kind in comparison Last night people were tweeting out a blank page headlined "Full text of the statement from the Prime Minister’s Office on Sushma-Lalit Modi issue" The PM’s silence has moved his gleeful critics to reach for new heights of eloquence “Are there other people involved The Prime Minister must come clean He must come out of his political vipassana” Congress spokesperson Tom Vadakkan said “My submission to the Prime Minister is come out of hiding enough is enough and break your silence So far Mr Prime Minister you have chosen silence over action Now the country would like you to act not to continue in hiding" piped up Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad "There is no way for the centre and PM now and he has to tell the truth If the PM mocked his predecessor by calling him `Maun Mohan’ Singh it is fit for him to not become Narendra Maun Modi" said AAP spokesperson Sanjay Singh delivering what may well be the cruelest blow In the past the Prime Minister has deftly employed strategic silence to ride out a number of controversies mostly of the kind sparked by the Hindutva motormouths in his party But as he has since found staying mum is a policy that offers diminishing returns Silence that seemed strategic in the first few iterations began to read as complicity (hence his recent clarifications on minority issues) and now inevitably as weakness Unfortunately for him Lalit Modi’s salvoes at the Congress party — he is truly bipartisan when venting his ire — have not done the same damage Accusing both Pranab Mukherjee and P Chidambaram of targeting him in retaliation for Shashi Tharoor’s IPL scandal doesn’t hurt entirely Whatever their reason they stand accused of taking action against Lalit Modi not silently supporting him With the threat of yet another Parliament session being derailed by his party’s political woes the PM however will have to do not just speak And that maybe the worst piece for news for Lalit Modi yet According to media reports the Enforcement Directorate is in the process of readying a red corner notice against Modi The Times of India reports as a first step the ED will send "a letter rogatory (a judicial request for evidence) to Mauritius in connection with its money laundering investigation into television rights of IPL facilitated by Modi" The BCCI had lodged an FIR against Lalit Modi in connection with the Rs 468 crore deal struck between World Sports Group (WSG) and Multi Screen Media (MSM) for television rights of IPL The complaint in turn led to the ED registering a money laundering case against him accusing him of being the beneficiary of the money given by MSM to WSG As TOI notes "PMLA allows for criminal charges to be pressed against an individual and ED can press for Modi’s arrest and extradition from a foreign country through this after an RCN is issued" All of which means that Lalit Modi’s UK staycation may soon be coming to an end According to India Today "Red Corner notice will mean that UK authorities will have to decide on arresting Lalit Modi and extradition proceedings will then be commenced against him ED sources said that there is enough evidence to nail Modi in the UK courts as well" Whatever the UPA government did we can do better That’s the message the Modi sarkar will have to send in the days to come And dragging Lalit Modi back to India by the scruff of his neck may well be the only way to do it Lalit Modi has thus far escaped extradition thanks to the good graces of the controversial and influential British MP Keith Vaz But now that Vaz himself is under media scrutiny in the United Kingdom — which is also what led to the present fracas involving Sushma Swaraj — it is unlikely that he will stick his neck out for Modi any time soon Even as he foolishly runs his mouth off in the false safety of distant shores Lalit Modi is rapidly running out friends and options And he has given the other Modi every incentive to strip him entirely of the same While all eyes are trained on the wounds inflicted on Swaraj and Raje it is Lalit Modi who has stumbled right onto his own sword By: PTI | Mumbai |
